DPhiE Values

Greek Letters
Delta Phi Epsilon’s greek letters signify special meanings to all members who are bound together by bonds of sisterhood.

Founders
In 1917, five women at NYU School of Law couldn’t find an inclusive organization that would accept them. So, they started their own. Our Founders were bold, courageous students who challenged the status quo and did not let society define their future.
Our DIMES:
• Dorothy Cohen Schwartzman
• Ida Bienstock Landau
• Minna Goldsmith Mahler
• Eve Effron Robin
• Sylvia Steierman Cohn

Gemstone
Our gemstone is a pearl. Pearls lose their luster when not in contact with human warmth, just like our sisterhood.
Flower
Our flower is the lovely purple iris. It reflects wisdom, strength and courage.

Mascot
Seen as a symbol of what is good and pure in the world, the unicorn is our official mascot.
Motto
“Esse Quam Videri” - To be, rather than to seem to be. Essentially, it means don’t pretend to be something that you’re not. Be your true, authentic self.

Crest
In ancient times, a family crest was often used as a flag to publicly display pride in their identity. Our crest has deep significance to initiated members of Delta Phi Epsilon. The three candles represent the three values of DPhiE: justice, sisterhood, and love.
Colors
Our colors are royal purple and pure gold.
